2 August 2022 - Mask Wearing In School:
You all know that all schools have been asked by the Ministry of Education and Health to enforce mask wearing by Yr4-8 students, and adults in school. This is due to the need to protect people, to help with absenteeism and to calm COVID-anxiety. As a Board and school we have tried really hard to find a middle road to this guidance, as we have the whole way through COVID. In the meantime, until our community is adversely affected by any new wave of COVID, we have asked all adults coming into school to wear a mask. This models good habits to our children and also protects them and staff against bugs that may be lurking, but are unknown. At our 3WConferences, at assembly, coming into classes or to the office we ask that all adults wear a mask for these short times. We know that some have exemptions from mask wearing. However, for our children, for our staff we ask that you do. We have spare ones for you to wear if you need them. MASK UPDATE - Term 3 2022: You may have heard in the news that the Ministry of Education is strongly recommending the wearing of masks for students in Y4-8 from Monday. We have considered what this means for our school: We support all students who choose to wear a mask, but it is not compulsory to wear them at Halcombe School. We have masks available at school for those who would like to wear them. The rules for whānau visiting our school are really simple - wear a mask anytime you’re inside; visiting the office, catching up with your child’s teacher or attending assembly. For those students aged 12+, masks must be worn on the bus. This rule hasn’t changed. Thank you for your support. |

Moving to Orange: What it means for Halcombe School
Kia ora koutou,
You’ll be aware that Minister of Education announced the move to Orange at 11:59pm tonight [13 April 2022].
The decision to move to Orange has been made on public health advice and reflects that we are moving past the peak of cases and our health system is able to cope. We are seeing that cases are declining due to high levels of vaccination and natural immunity after infection.
I wanted to give you an update on what the move to Orange means for our school.
At Orange, face masks are no longer required at school. However public health advice is that masks continue to be strongly encouraged when indoors. Parents - you do not need to wear a mask when you're on the school grounds, but we ask that you put one on if you are coming into the office, classrooms, or attending assembly. Thank you for your support.
Students who are 12+ years of age are still required to wear masks on the bus.
We also ask that your child (if they are Year 4+) continues to bring a mask to school every day. There may be times that we’ll ask them to wear a mask – for example, when we are having an assembly in the hall. If there are a high number of cases at school or in the community, we may need masks to be worn in classrooms for a time.
At Orange, students aged 12 and above are still required to wear a face mask on school buses or public transport.
We will continue to keep all the other health measures in place at school that we know slow the spread of COVID-19:
· Classes being well-ventilated,
· Maintaining good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette,
· Appropriate physical distancing whenever we can and,
· Staying home if we are sick.
We are looking forward to a few less restrictions and returning to school life that is a bit closer to normal.
Ngā mihi,
Alastair & The H Team.
