" Today for Tomorrow "

The Curriculum means "what our students are learning". Halcombe School is guided by The New Zealand Curriculum
and develops its own curriculum that meets the learning needs and aspirations of our students.

For more information about The New Zealand Curriculum and "what we learn", please visit the Ministry of Education's website.

Having fun while learning!

Our curriculum is developed by our principal and teachers.
Our Board of Trustees is required to make sure that a quality programme of teaching and learning is in place.

Learning Languages

There are eight learning areas in The New Zealand Curriculum: English, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Learning Languages, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Sciences, and Technology.
You can find out more at:

Technology builds skills for life!

The key competencies, which sit alongside the learning areas, are designed to encourage enjoyment of learning, the ability to think critically, manage self, set goals to overcome obstacles and get along with others – the attributes children need to succeed as adults. Visit our Key Competencies webpage.

The Ministry has a great illustration of how the Key Competencies, Learning Areas link with the school Vision and Values:

Assessment & Reporting to Families
Within each curriculum area, students progress through eight levels. Each level represents a learning stage in that subject. Most Year 1-8 students will be learning between
levels 1-5.

Our teachers will regularly assess students to see what levels they are at, what progress they have made and what their "next steps" will be. Extra support is provided for students that need it. We report achievement at our 3-Way Conferences and in written reports at year-end. Families can meet with teachers at any time if they want to know more about their child's learning or if they have concerns or need guidance.

Achievement TargetsPhysical Education & Sport
Every year, schools set student achievement targets for a learning area of particular interest or focus. We work hard and make an extra effort in teaching and learning in the target area. The other learning areas are still covered. These targets form part of our annual Charter. We report on our progress to the Ministry of Education.

National Standards
are new standards of achievement for reading, writing and maths. Schools are now required to report on student achievement against these Standards.
